New laws to restore police bail powers within days

“Ministers hope urgent legislation will pass through the House of Commons on Thursday and the House of Lords next Tuesday to restore the ability for officers to bail suspects while continuing their investigations.
The 25-year practice was effectively ended in May when the High Court upheld a ruling by a district judge that police must question and charge a suspect within four days of detention.
It sparked fears that tens of thousands of suspected murderers, rapists and other criminals could walk free if police cannot built up a case in time.”
